Dr. Hakim J. Lucas
Dr. Hakim J. Lucas
Hakim J. Lucas, Ph.D., is the 13th president of Virginia Union University (VUU). He brings nearly two decades of progressive leadership experience in higher education. His career successes include fundraising, strategic planning, and the engagement and retention of students at historically Black colleges and universities.
Dr. Lucas had served as the vice president for institutional advancement at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, FL, prior to becoming president at VUU. Under his leadership, unrestricted and restricted giving rose by 30% and the endowment increased by 53%. He developed a strategic government relations plan that resulted in millions of dollars in appropriations from the state of Florida. These funds aided in the development of new academic programs and a Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Development. His responsibilities also included chairing the Strategic Growth and Sustainability Taskforce, as well as, leading the sponsored research team that secured more than $45 million in research grants.
Prior to his accomplishments at Bethune-Cookman, Dr. Lucas served as director of development at State University of New York at Old Westbury and the dean of institutional advancement and development at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, NY. He was also a tenured lecturer and deputy chair of the philosophy and religion department at Medgar Evers College.
Dr. Lucas earned his bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College, a master’s degree in education from Tufts University, and a master of divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary. He earned his doctoral degree in education from Fordham University.

Pastor Smokie Norful is a world renowned Pastor, award-winning recording artist, educator, author, and visionary who has a strong passion for saving souls and transforming the lives of others. He has reached the heights of success in both ministry and music, with over 25 years of preaching, 17 years of pastoring, and his music career spanning over two decades.
As an internationally known musician, music composer, producer, and singer, Norful’s 2002 solo debut release “I NEED YOU NOW” catapulted him to worldwide recognition.
Since that time, he has found commercial success with five Number 1 Billboard Albums and over 3 million albums sold worldwide. He has earned 2 Grammy Awards, 11 Stellar Awards, 5 Dove Awards, 1 Soul Train Music Award, 2 NAACP Image award nominations, and 3 BET award nominations.
In addition to his countless awards and honors, he is also an accomplished author with his first book, Take the Lid Off, an extraordinarily empowering compilation of his personal life stories and antidotes as well as biblical and practical insights to help every individual maximize their potential.
Pastor Norful is an educator at heart. Having received his bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, in his ongoing pursuit of growth and development in leadership he also pursued a Master of Divinity from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary and in May of 2018 received a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Trinity International University. Pastor Norful is currently enrolled at Concordia University in pursuit of a PHD in Organizational Leadership.
17 years ago, Pastor Smokie Norful and his wife First Lady Carla Norful, officially launched Victory Cathedral Worship Center, in Bolingbrook, IL on Sept. 20, 2005 - where he serves as Senior Pastor. Over the past 17 years, Pastor Norful and the Victory Cathedral Church Family have experienced extraordinary and unprecedented growth in the far western suburbs of Chicago. Victory Cathedral has connected with over 1.5 million worshipers, led 15,000 souls to Christ, and physically and spiritually assisted countless thousands of families over the course of 17 years.
Victory is now a multicampus ministry, including thousands attending weekly by way of the online Global Campus. The south Chicago campus was launched in 2007 and is known as Victory City Chicago. Victory City Birmingham was launched under the leadership of Pastor Brandon Knight, and now Victory City Atlanta will be launched in the spring of 2022!
With more campuses launching in the near future, the ministry continues by focusing on reaching the community and encouraging its members to live to be missed, not just remembered. Reverend Sheleta Evette Fomby has a long and distinguished record of Kingdom service in the Body of Christ. She is currently the Co Founder and Co-Pastor of the New Life Church, Inc. in Laurel, Maryland, serving in partnership with Rev. Omari K. Hughes.
She formerly served in various multi-campus roles at Reid Temple AME Church under the dynamic leadership of Rev. Dr. Lee P. Washington and Rev. Dr. Matthew L. Watley. In this role, she held various executive leadership roles and responsibilities that benefited the membership, including Director of Discipleship and Development, Director of Church Life, Women’s Ministry, and Dir. Small Groups Ministry, Congregational Care Minister, Managing Minister of Evening Worship, and a host of other critical components within the life of the Reid Temple AMEC organization.
Reverend Fomby is the former Senior Pastor of the Hemingway Memorial AME Church in District Heights, MD, in the Second Episcopal District. Her historic appointment marked the first time a woman was elevated as pastor in this congregation. Under her leadership, the church has experienced a congregational revitalization and expanded kingdom witness.
Rev. Fomby is a native of Washington, D.C., and received a Bachelor of Science in Human Resources from the University of Maryland. She then completed her Master of Divinity at Wesley Theological Seminary, focusing on African American Church Studies. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary with an emphasis on risking faithfully to engage in the work of de-centering Whiteness and nurturing an anti racist community as Christian formation.
Rev. Fomby is currently a participant in the TMS Global Thrive Program. This cohort pairs African American and Ghanaian pastors for mutual growth and learning through cross-cultural dialogue and immersion experiences in each other's communities.
Rev. Fomby has been a collaborating participant in the Cultivating Courageous Resisters Organization. This national faith based project convenes socially conscious women of color. Through deep collaborative approaches, CCR shares collective justice engagement models, creating and curating resources, focusing on strategic methodologies for addressing current justice issues to serve the present age.
Rev. Fomby has nobly served her country; she is a 5-point military veteran of the United States Air Force, serving active duty during Desert Storm Shield. Upon completing my military service, she received an honorable discharge with various honors of distinction for decorated military service. Rev.
Fomby is the founder of Sequoia Ministries based in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. Sequoia Ministries is a non denominational ministry dedicated to sharing the Gospel and extending the love of Jesus Christ through clear and relevant biblical preaching and teaching, worship gatherings, and Christian fellowship. Through this ministry, she has proven to be fully committed to liberating lives, encouraging hearts, and inspiring hope through the faithful
proclamation of God’s word.
Rev. Fomby received the Lord Jesus Christ at the age of 16 at the New Covenant Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., under Bishop A. Norris Smith. She received ordination as Itinerant Deacon in the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church in April 2007 and Itinerant Elder orders in April 2009.
A gifted, creative, astute preacher, Rev. Fomby has been recognized as one of this generation's emerging voices. She has been privileged to proclaim the Gospel in churches, retreats, and conferences domestically and internationally. In addition, Rev. Fomby’s sermons have been included in These Sisters Can Say It, edited by Darryl Sims and Dr. Cynthia Hale. Rev. Fomby’s preaching gifts have garnered many prestigious invitations, including serving as the George A. Crawley Women in Ministry at the historic 102nd Hampton Minister’s Conference.
Rev. Fomby has a heart for seeing people reach their full potential in Christ. She firmly believes that she has come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord. It is not clear all that God will do through her, but she is indeed a voice for such a time as this. She is encouraged daily by Philippians 1:6, “…being confident of this very thing that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

Rev. Dr. Nicole Martin
Rev. Dr. Nicole Martin
Reverend Doctor Nicole Martin was born and educated in Baltimore, Maryland. She graduated Magna cum laude from Vanderbilt University with a triple major in Human and Organizational Development, Educational Studies, and French.
Dr. Martin received her Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, where she was the recipient of the Jones Prize in Music and the Swink Prize in Preaching. During her time in seminary, she served as the Director of Evangelism at St. James AME Church in Newark, New Jersey, and spent a summer in ministry at Mandalay Baptist. Church in Cape Town, South Africa. She earned a Doctor of Ministry at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary with an emphasis on African American Redemptive Leadership.
Dr. Martin serves as the National Mobilizer with the American Bible Society, where she oversees scripture engagement work in cities across the US. She also teaches courses in Ministry and Leadership Development at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Charlotte. She is active in ministry at Kingdom Fellowship AME Church in Silver Spring, Maryland, where she supports the Discipleship Ministry.
Dr. Martin has been inducted into the prestigious Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Board of Preachers at Morehouse College. Dr. Martin is a gifted writer and author of the books, Made to Lead: Empowering Women for Ministry and Leaning In, Letting Go, a 2019 Lenten devotional through Chalice Press. Her writings have been featured in USA Today, Christianity Today, and The Charlotte Observer, which listed her among the “Top Seven to Watch in 2011.” She was also named one of the “Top 40 Under 40 for 2017” by the Charlotte Business Journal.
Dr. Martin has been selected to participate in a variety of ministries locally and globally, including serving as a representative for the Lausanne Younger Leaders Gathering in Indonesia and as a co convener for the National Evangelical-Jewish Conversations. She is the newest member of the Board of Trustees for Gordon College and Executive Director of Soulfire International Ministries, which focuses on empowering others to reach their fullest potential in Christ.
Dr. Martin is married to her best friend, Dr. Mark Martin, and they have two beautiful daughters, Addison and Josephine. Above all, she has a passion for God, a contagious excitement for the Gospel, and an insatiable desire that God be glorified in her life and in the world.

Rev Dr R Janae Pitts Murdock
Pastor R. Janae Pitts-Murdock, a native of Detroit, Michigan, and ordained into the gospel ministry at New Bethel Baptist Church under Rev. Robert Smith, Jr., is a lover of God and God’s people. She travels the nation inspiring people to live their best lives. Pastor Janae is a lifelong learner who believes that excellence honors God, and for her, anything less is unacceptable.
Pastor Janae is a graduate of the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies, Carnegie Mellon University with a Master of Science degree in Public Policy & Management, United Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree, and University of Memphis with a Master of Business Administration. Pastor Janae has been featured in The African American Pulpit, a quarterly journal that served as a repository for the very best of African American preaching and provides practical and creative resources for persons in ministry. She is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and served as Chaplain of the Southern Region which includes Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida and the Bahamas.
Pastor Janae served in the U.S. Department of the Army as a U.S. Presidential Management Intern and later as a Logistics Management Specialist. She was employed at The Pentagon during the September 11, 2001 attacks. While grateful to have been on assignment and away from The Pentagon on that day, Pastor Janae mourns with those who lost loved ones. Pastor Janae served as Lead Pastor at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Memphis, TN under Pastor Frank A. Thomas. While at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church, Pastor Janae charismatically led transformation focused ministries into new models of ministry and spearheaded the church’s satellite campus launch. After Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church, Pastor Janae was employed by the City of Memphis as the Coordinator of Teen Services for the Memphis Public Library and Information Center where she was responsible for teen programming at 18 public library locations. In this role, she spearheaded the $2 million construction and development of a digital teen learning lab, CLOUD901, transforming Memphis youth from information consumers to information creators. Pastor Janae also served as Connections Pastor at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Rogers, Arkansas where she created systems to connect members to serving opportunities and improve ministry administration.
In August 2019, Pastor Janae began her tenure as the Interim Senior Pastor at Light of the World Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Indianapolis, Indiana. During that period, the church experienced healing, revitalization, and renewed strength. Under her leadership, Light of the World has launched a leadership development strategy that nurtures church leaders quarterly, faith formation strategy that trained Sunday School and Small group leaders, and initiated numerous virtual ministries like daily prayer calls, online meditation, wellness groups and growth groups to aid members during the COVID-19 global pandemic. She accomplished all of that while being a candidate for the Doctor of Philosophy in African American Preaching and Sacred Rhetoric at Christian Theological Seminary. In November 2020, Light of the World Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) elected Pastor Janae to be their sixth Senior Pastor and first female Senior Pastor in their 154-year history.
Pastor Janae is united in holy matrimony to the one she calls, “God’s embodiment of divine love,” Jeffrey Allen Murdock, PhD, who is Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education and Associate Director of Choral Studies at the University of Arkansas. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Together they parent two sons, Jeffrey III and John Patrick, and a goddaughter, Jasmine.

Pastor Gailliard has dedicated the past 20 years to human economic and community development in North America and South Africa. Since 2005, he has pastored Word Tabernacle Church. This church has grown from a church plant of 14 people to a mega-church serving thousands of families from twenty-five North Carolina Counties and six Virginia counties. With campuses in Rocky Mount and Tarboro, NC. In 2013, Word Tabernacle was named amongst the 100 fastest growing churches in America. The church is housed in a 110,000 sq. ft. former Home Depot now called The Impact Center, providing a place, programs, partnerships, and paradigms that enable people to progress. The Impact Center offers opportunities in capacity building, childhood literacy, college & career readiness, culinary arts & hospitality, faith & family, health & wellness, leadership development, media & broadcast, and performing arts & worship.
He is the founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of The ReachCenter, Inc. which exists to equip individuals to secure gainful employment, prevent homelessness, and break the cycle of violence through education,skills development, and connections to community resources.
In 2016, he was named the Distinguished Citizen by the Rocky MountChamber of Commerce. He is a 2016 inductee into the Board of Preachers ofMorehouse College. He is serving his second term as State Representative in the North Carolina General Assembly. He has been appointed to several Statewide Task Forces: NC Task Force for Racial Equity in Criminal Justice,Small Business Policy Task Force, and Task Force to Develop ARepresentative and Inclusive Vision for Education (DRIVE). He also serves on the Board of Trustees of Louisburg College.
His work has been featured in publications such as Fact & Trends, ChurchExecutive, Business North Carolina, and many national and local newspapers.
Pastor/ Representative Gailliard is married to Angela Gailliard and together that have six children. He is an alumnus of Morehouse College and St. Joseph’s University.

The Reverend Dr. Marcus D. Cosby, the third child born to the late Mr. Rogers Cosby and Mrs. Bobbie J. Cosby, serves as the Senior Pastor of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. A proud native of Chicago, Illinois and a product of Emmanuel Baptist Church where Dr. L.K. Curry served as pastor, Cosby received the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religion and English from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, the Master of Divinity Degree in Homiletics and Christian Education from the Morehouse School of Religion at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, Georgia and the Doctor of Ministry Degree in Homiletics from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Lombard, Illinois.
Dr. Cosby is married to his high school sweetheart, Mrs. Audrey Marie Cosby, and they have been blessed with three beautiful daughters, Adrienne Marie, Ashley Marie and Aliyah Marie and two sons, Marcus D., II and Matthew D. Cosby.
As the successor to the Founding Pastor of Wheeler Avenue, Dr. William A. Lawson, Pastor Cosby has been blessed to continue the ministry of this intentionally intergenerational congregation in the inner city of Houston, Texas since 2004, having served as Associate Pastor since 1998. With four Sunday worship services and a membership of more than 15,000, he has led the congregation to ensure its impact both on and far beyond the church campus with the inception of the Wheeler Avenue Christian Academy, serving children from 6 weeks old through the second grade; by opening a transitional housing facility for homeless single mothers in the Third Ward community of Houston; through cultivating a missional outreach in multiple villages in South Africa; and maintaining a passion for creatively impacting the lives of the forsaken and forgotten wherever they may be found.
As a consequence of his passion for qualitative preaching, Dr. Cosby has committed himself to equipping preachers for the work of the ministry. In addition to training the more than 100 ministers who comprise the Clergy Team of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, he serves as Adjunct Professor of Homiletics at Houston Graduate School of Theology and has taught the same at the Houston extension program of the ITC. In 2008, he was inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Board of Preachers at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. And in 2013 he became the Founder and CEO of Preaching with Power and Authority Ministries, a corporation committed to the pedagogy and promotion of relevant biblical preaching for the 21st Century.
Additionally, Dr. Cosby is a member of the Board of Trustees of his beloved Alma Mater, Fisk University, where he serves as the Chair of the Academic Excellence and Student Engagement Committee; as well as a member of the General Alumni Association of the University. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Home Mission Board of the National Baptist Convention, USA, the Samuel Dewitt Proctor Conference, the African American Pulpit, the Houston Area Urban League, Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston, the Texas Commission for Community Service and Volunteerism, and as an Advisory Board Member of The Gardner C. Taylor Preaching Archives and Listening Room in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity and a Life Member of the NAACP. Among the gifts and talents with which God has blessed Pastor Cosby, none are more meaningful and fulfilling to him than preaching and teaching. He has been blessed to carry his ministry across the country and on the Mother Continent of Africa. He has lectured, preached and taught in numerous and varied settings, including conferences, conventions, retreats, revivals and on university and seminary campuses. Finally, Dr. Cosby seeks to encourage and empower all humanity through the timeless and transformative truths found in the Word of God.

Rev Dr Bryan Carter
Bryan Carter is best known as a community leader, connector, thought leader, pastor, and dynamic communicator. He serves as the pastor of Concord Church in Dallas, TX, where he has served since 2003. Bryan is a passionate leader with a vision for inspiring people to grow to their full potential.
Bryan is committed to serving the city of Dallas and beyond through working toward city transformation, building stronger families, and economic development. He currently serves on the boards of Frost Bank Dallas Advisory Board, Mayor’s Star Council, Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) International, and Family Life Ministries.
Bryan also serves as board chair for Harmony Community Development Corporation, an organization committed to improving the community of southern Dallas through building stronger families and economic development. He also leads the African American Pastors Coalition, a fellowship of over sixty churches committed to serving and addressing key needs in the Dallas community, and co leads Dallas Clergy, a fellowship of Dallas churches. His past board service includes: Dallas Regional Chamber, Dallas Police Department Community Advisory Board, Mayor’s Taskforce Against Domestic Violence, Impact Dallas Capital, Dallas Habitat for Humanity, Dallas ISD Education Foundation, Leadership Network, and Mentoring Brother to Brother. Bryan leads with a focus on developing people. He has served as co-presenter for “33: The Series” a curriculum on authentic manhood, and as a presenter for “The Art of Marriage” a curriculum on building strong marriages.
Bryan is a graduate of Oklahoma State University, where he earned a Bachelor of
Science in Secondary Education with a specialty in Science and Math. He is a graduate
of Dallas Theological Seminary, where he earned a Master of Arts in Christian Education
with a specialty in Family Ministry. He is a recipient of an honorary Doctorate of
Divinity from Dallas Baptist University. Bryan is married to his college sweetheart,
Stephanie, and has two daughters, Kaitlyn and Kennedy, and one son, Carson.

Dr. Conway Edwards is the founding and lead pastor of One Community Church, a fast-growing church in Plano, Texas ministering to the communities of Collin, Denton and Dallas Counties weekly. As lead pastor, Dr. Edward’s unique ability to communicate the truths of the Bible in a relevant and uncompromising manner has helped to reach a generation of men, women, singles, couples and families embedded in a culture defined by individualism, materialism and humanism.
Dr. Edwards holds a Master of Theology, with an emphasis in Pastoral Ministry, from Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS). While at DTS, he was a Leadership Fellow with the Center for Christian Leadership, under the guidance of Dr. Howard Hendricks. Dr. Edwards also holds a Doctorate in Strategic Leadership from Regent University. He formerly served as Director of Singles at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, Texas under the leadership of Senior Pastor, Dr. Tony Evans, and is passionate about leadership and the local church. He is author of 20/80 Rule – Making the Shift to a Volunteer-Driven Culture and co-author of Going Up, When Love’s In View and The Undercover Woman, with his wife, Jada.
Dr. Edwards and Jada are proud parents of a son, Joah, and a daughter, Chloe.

The Pastor Dr. Jawanza Karriem Colvin is the 6th pastor of the Olivet Institutional Baptist Church in Cleveland, OH. As servant-leader of this 4,000 member congregation, Pastor Colvin follows in its historic tradition of community builders, preacher-scholars and social activists.
Pastor Colvin is a cum laude graduate of Morehouse College, receiving a Bachelor of Arts (B.A) with a double major in History and Religion. He earned a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York City and holds a Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) from Columbia University.
A proponent of Christian praxis, Pastor Colvin has sought to integrate personal devotion and critical reflection into a ministry of social action and transformation. He has been a voice in the pulpit and activist in the community on matters of justice, equity and reform.
Pastor Colvin has distinguished himself as a clergy and civic leader, having been the recipient of numerous honors and citations noting his commitment to Christian ministry, scholarship and service. Among his recognitions include induction in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Board of Preachers of Morehouse College, the recipient of the William Augustus Jones Social Justice Award at the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the National Action Network in New York City and being named to Cleveland Power 100, among the most influential individuals in Northeast Ohio.
Committed to service in both the public square and within sacred walls, Pastor Colvin continues to serve on numerous community and faith-based organization, advisory boards, committees and working groups. He was a founding co-chair of Greater Cleveland Congregations (GCC), the largest multi-racial, interfaith social justice coalition in northeast Ohio and serves on the board of Cleveland Museum of Art, The Greater Cleveland Food Bank, The Martha Jennings Holdings Foundation and the St. Luke Foundation.
Pastor Colvin married to the lovely Allison Jaynes Colvin. Together, they are the proud parents of two sons, Asher and Philip.
